Someone really needs to explain to me the allure of colored diamonds. I was watching a commercial last night for these little beauties and found myself thinking how beautiful the new purple diamonds are — and then I got to thinking — if I have a purple diamond, how will anyone know that it IS a diamond? Why spend the money on a colored diamond when there are gemstones of similar color which cost a lot less? And isn’t the point of having diamonds is so people KNOW you have a lot of diamonds?
I know there are people who will say that isn’t true. Do you think Marilyn Monroe‘s Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend would have had the same impact if she had been wearing chocolate, purple and pink diamonds? I think NOT! What if the Hope Diamond was a big chocolate-colored diamond – it would it be quite as impressive? I don’t think SO!
Don’t get me wrong — I LOVE colored stones. I actually like them better than diamonds because they seem to have more life and passion than a clear stone. I love the reds of rubies, the blue of sapphires, the green of emeralds and the purple of amethyst — and I want a diamond to look like a diamond.
So – I repeat – someone REALLY needs to explain to me why these diamonds are so popular — and if we need to change Marilyn’s iconic song to Purple Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend.
